Beclomethasone Dipropionate

Uses of Beclomethasone Dipropionate

Beclomethasone Dipropionate is a corticosteroid (steroid) medicine used for the long-term prevention and management of asthma symptoms.

Beclomethasone Dipropionate is commonly used for:

  • Asthma prevention and maintenance: Reduces airway inflammation on a regular basis to prevent asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. It is a preventer inhaler and is not used for sudden relief during an asthma attack.
  • Allergic rhinitis (nasal spray form): When used as a nasal spray, it reduces inflammation in the nasal passages, relieving a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, and nasal itching caused by hay fever or year-round nasal allergies.
  • Non-allergic rhinitis: Helps manage persistent nasal inflammation not caused by allergens.
  • Inflammatory airway conditions associated with eosinophilic inflammation: Reduces elevated eosinophil activity (a type of white blood cell) in the airways that contributes to chronic airway inflammation.

Side effects of Beclomethasone Dipropionate

  • Oral candidiasis (thrush)

  • Throat irritation

  • Persistent cough

  • Headache

How Beclomethasone Dipropionate works

Beclomethasone Dipropionate works by reducing inflammation in the airways (or nasal passages), which helps keep asthma symptoms under control on a long-term basis.

It belongs to the corticosteroid class of medicines. When inhaled, Beclomethasone Dipropionate is delivered directly to the lining of the airways, where it binds to glucocorticoid receptors inside the cells. This binding triggers a series of changes in gene activity that collectively reduce the production of inflammatory chemicals such as cytokines, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes.

As a result:

  • Swelling and redness of the airway lining decreases.
  • Mucus production reduces.
  • The airways become less sensitive to triggers such as allergens, exercise, and cold air.
  • The risk of asthma symptoms and attacks reduces over time with regular use.

Because Beclomethasone Dipropionate acts locally in the lungs, much of the dose remains at the site of action. Very little is absorbed into the general bloodstream at standard doses, which reduces the risk of systemic (whole-body) side effects compared to oral steroids. It does not provide immediate relief during an acute asthma attack a short-acting reliever inhaler should be used for that."
