Aztreonam

Uses of Aztreonam

Aztreonam is a monobactam antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by gram-negative bacteria.

It is commonly used for:

  • Urinary tract infections: Treats complicated and uncomplicated infections of the bladder and urinary tract.
  • Respiratory tract infections: Treats infections of the lower airways and lungs.
  • Septicaemia: Treats serious bloodstream infections.
  • Bacterial meningitis: Treats infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
  • Skin, abdominal, and gynaecological infections: Treats infections of the skin, abdomen, and female reproductive organs caused by susceptible bacteria, as prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects of Aztreonam

  • Pain or tenderness at the injection site

  • Rash

  • Diarrhoea

  • Nausea

  • Eosinophilia

How Aztreonam works

  • Aztreonam is a monobactam antibiotic.
  • It works by binding to proteins that gram-negative bacteria need to build their cell walls. This weakens the bacterial cell wall.
  • Without a stable cell wall, the bacteria are unable to maintain their structure and eventually rupture and die. This helps clear infections caused by gram-negative bacteria, including some that are resistant to other antibiotics.
