Azelnidipine

Uses of Azelnidipine

  • Azelnidipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). By relaxing and widening blood vessels, it helps reduce the strain on the heart and lowers the risk of serious cardiovascular complications.
  • Azelnidipine is commonly used for:

    1. Hypertension (high blood pressure): Lowers elevated blood pressure to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage associated with uncontrolled hypertension.
    2. Angina pectoris (chest pain): Helps relieve and prevent chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart by widening the coronary arteries.
    3. Stroke prevention: Used in patients with hypertension where blood pressure control is important in reducing the risk of a stroke.
    4. Cardiovascular protection after heart attack: In some cases, prescribed to help improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients recovering from a heart attack, as directed by a doctor.

Side effects of Azelnidipine

  • Dizziness

  • Headache

  • Peripheral oedema (swelling in ankles and feet)

  • Flushing

  • Gingival hyperplasia (gum enlargement)

How Azelnidipine works

  • Azelnidipine works by blocking calcium channels in the walls of blood vessels and the heart.
  • Calcium plays an important role in causing the smooth muscle cells lining blood vessels to contract and tighten. By preventing calcium from entering these cells, Azelnidipine causes the blood vessels to relax and widen (vasodilation). This reduces the resistance that the heart has to work against when pumping blood, which in turn lowers blood pressure.
  • Azelnidipine also has a gradual onset of action and a long duration of effect, which helps maintain steady blood pressure control throughout the day without causing sudden drops in blood pressure.
  • In patients with angina, the widening of coronary arteries improves blood flow and oxygen delivery to the heart muscle, reducing the frequency and severity of chest pain episodes.
