How Sodium Valproate + Valproic Acid works

  • Sodium valproate is an anticonvulsant that exerts its therapeutic effects through multiple mechanisms. Primarily, it enhances the availability of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, leading to increased inhibitory signaling. This results in the suppression of abnormal neuronal activity, particularly in conditions like epilepsy. Additionally, sodium valproate modulates voltage-gated sodium channels and inhibits certain enzymes, contributing to its antiepileptic properties. Moreover, it has mood-stabilizing effects, making it useful in the management of bipolar disorder. The comprehensive actions of sodium valproate help control seizures and stabilize mood in various neurological and psychiatric conditions.
  • Valproic acid dissociates into the valproate ion upon reaching the gastrointestinal tract. While the precise mechanisms underlying its antiepileptic effects remain unclear, it is believed that valproate enhances gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the brain. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps regulate neuronal excitability, which may contribute to valproate's ability to control seizures.
