Rituximab

Uses of Rituximab

Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody used to manage certain cancers and autoimmune conditions.

It is commonly used for:

  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: Treats these blood cancers.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Manages this autoimmune joint condition when other treatments have not worked well enough.
  • Other autoimmune conditions: Used to treat conditions such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis and pemphigus vulgaris, as prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects of Rituximab

  • Headache

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Nausea

  • Skin Rashes

How Rituximab works

  • Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody that targets a protein called CD20, found on the surface of immune cells called B-cells.
  • By binding to CD20, Rituximab triggers the immune system to attack and destroy these B-cells, and also activates a part of the immune system that ruptures the B-cell's outer membrane.
  • In cancers where B-cells multiply abnormally, this reduces the number of cancerous cells. In autoimmune conditions, reducing B-cells helps calm the overactive immune response responsible for the disease.
