Dosage Forms Available

• Risperidone can be taken orally (tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, or solution) and administered intramuscularly (injection).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Risperidone can be used in both adults and children older than 5 years.

Contraindications

• This medicine is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Risperidone or paliperidone.

• It should also not be used in patients with severe hepatic or cardiac impairment.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Risperidone may interact with CYP2D6 inhibitors (such as fluoxetine and paroxetine), CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as ketoconazole and ritonavir), CYP3A4 inducers (such as carbamazepine and rifampin), and QT-prolonging medicines (such as amiodarone and procainamide).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• If an overdose of Risperidone happens, it could lead to symptoms such as drowsiness, rapid heart rate, and fainting. Urgent medical attention is needed if an overdose is suspected.

• If you miss a dose of Risperidone, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water may help manage some of the side effects, like dry mouth.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Risperidone may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery, particularly if it causes dizziness or sleepiness. Avoid such activities if you experience these side effects.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The use of Risperidone during pregnancy and lactation should be done only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus or child. It is recommended to discuss with your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with pre-existing conditions such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, or conditions affecting blood pressure need to exercise caution when using Risperidone.

• Also, care should be taken by patients with diabetes, as this medicine can raise blood sugar levels.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Limit caffeine intake as it can potentially interfere with sleep patterns and worsen psychiatric symptoms in some individuals.
