Potassium Nitrate

Uses of Potassium Nitrate

Potassium Nitrate is a dental desensitising agent used to reduce dentine hypersensitivity.

Potassium Nitrate is commonly used for:

  • Dentine hypersensitivity: Reduces short, sharp tooth pain triggered by hot, cold, sweet, acidic, or tactile stimuli.
  • Daily sensitivity control: Helps calm exposed dentinal nerves when used regularly in an appropriate dental product.

Side effects of Potassium Nitrate

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort

  • Tooth staining

  • Allergic reactions such as eczema and urticaria

  • Atopic dermatitis

How Potassium Nitrate works

  • Potassium Nitrate acts as a nerve-desensitising agent in dental applications.
  • It works primarily by increasing the potassium concentration around sensory nerve fibres within the dentine–pulp complex. This reduces the ability of the nerves to repeatedly fire in response to stimuli.
  • As a result nerve excitability and transmission of pain signals are reduced, helping relieve the short, sharp pain associated with dentine hypersensitivity.
  • With regular use potassium nitrate can provide ongoing relief from sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, acidic, or tactile triggers.
