Pidotimod

Uses of Pidotimod

Pidotimod is an immunomodulatory medicine used to support and regulate the immune system, particularly in patients who are prone to recurrent infections. It helps strengthen the body's natural defences against bacteria and viruses.

It is commonly used for:

Recurrent respiratory tract infections: Reduces the frequency and severity of repeated upper and lower respiratory infections such as colds, sinusitis, bronchitis, and otitis media (ear infections) in children and adults.
Immunodeficiency states: Supports immune function in patients with a weakened immune system due to illness, medication, or other factors.
Adjuvant therapy in chronic respiratory conditions: Used alongside standard treatments for conditions such as asthma and COPD to reduce infection-related flare-ups.
Prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections: May help reduce the frequency of UTIs in susceptible individuals by boosting immune responses in the urinary tract.
Paediatric use: Commonly prescribed in children who suffer from repeated infections to help reduce school absences and antibiotic use.

Side effects of Pidotimod

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • Stomach pain

  • Skin rash or itching

  • Fatigue

How Pidotimod works

  • Pidotimod is a synthetic dipeptide that works as an immunomodulator, a medicine that regulates and enhances the body's immune response.
  • It works by stimulating the maturation and activity of dendritic cells, which are key cells that present foreign antigens (such as bacteria and viruses) to the immune system. This improves the efficiency of the immune response when the body encounters an infection.
  • Pidotimod also enhances the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and T-lymphocytes (particularly CD4+ T-helper cells), which are frontline defenders against infections. By increasing the production and activation of these immune cells, Pidotimod helps the body identify and destroy infectious agents more effectively.
  • Additionally, it promotes the expression of certain surface proteins (such as HLA-DR) on immune cells, improving the coordination of the overall immune response without over-stimulating it.
