Parnaparin

Uses of Parnaparin

Parnaparin is used to prevent and treat blood clots.

Parnaparin is commonly used for:

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Prevents blood clots forming in the deep veins, usually of the legs, especially after major surgery.
• Pulmonary embolism: Helps manage clots that travel to the lungs and block a pulmonary artery.
• Prevention of clotting during dialysis: Prevents blood from clotting during procedures involving extracorporeal circulation, such as haemodialysis.
• Post-operative clot prevention: Reduces the risk of clot formation following general and orthopaedic surgery.

Side effects of Parnaparin

  • Increased risk of bleeding

  • Pain at the injection site

  • Redness and swelling at the injection site

  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or hives

  • Unusual bruising or purple discolouration of the skin

How Parnaparin works

Parnaparin is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), a type of anticoagulant that works by preventing blood clots from forming or growing larger.

It increases the activity of a natural substance in the body called antithrombin III, which helps switch off the clotting process. By binding to antithrombin III, Parnaparin boosts its ability to block clotting factors, primarily factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, factor IIa (thrombin).

By inhibiting these clotting factors, Parnaparin prevents existing clots from growing and reduces the risk of new clots forming, which is important in conditions such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • This medicine is intended for adults of age above 18 years.

Contraindications

  • Parnaparin is contraindicated in patients with active significant bleeding.

  • It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).

  • Patients with a known hypersensitivity to Parnaparin or any of its components should avoid its use.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • Parnaparin may interact with other anticoagulants (such as warfarin), antiplatelet agents (like aspirin and clopidogrel), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (like ibuprofen and diclofenac), and thrombolytics (such as alteplase).

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • As Parnaparin is usually administered by a healthcare professional, an overdose is unlikely. However, receiving more than the prescribed dose may cause excessive bleeding. If you notice unusual bruising, bleeding, or blood in your urine or stools, seek immediate medical attention.
  • If you miss a scheduled dose of Parnaparin, contact your doctor or healthcare provider for advice. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any symptoms, please consult your doctor.

  • This medicine also requires caution in patients undergoing spinal/epidural anesthesia or spinal puncture as the risk of spinal/epidural hematoma is increased.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • A healthy diet and lifestyle can support the overall well-being of individuals managing conditions for which Parnaparin is indicated.

  • Stay adequately hydrated, especially if you are prone to blood clots.

  • Avoid prolonged periods of immobility. Regular physical activity can help maintain good circulation, which is important in preventing blood clots.
