Lacidipine

Uses of Lacidipine

Lacidipine is used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). It belongs to a class of medicines called calcium channel blockers, which help relax and widen blood vessels.

Lacidipine is commonly used for:

• Hypertension: Lowers high blood pressure, reducing strain on the heart and blood vessels.
• Long-term blood pressure control: Used as an ongoing treatment to help keep blood pressure within a healthy range.
• Reduction of the risk of hypertension-related complications: Helps lower the risk of complications linked to persistently high blood pressure, such as heart attack and stroke, when blood pressure is adequately controlled as part of overall cardiovascular risk management.

Side effects of Lacidipine

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Flushing of the skin

  • Fatigue or tiredness

  • Nausea

How Lacidipine works

Lacidipine works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, which helps lower blood pressure.

Calcium plays a role in causing the muscles surrounding blood vessels to contract. Lacidipine blocks calcium from entering these muscle cells by acting on calcium channels in the cell membrane.

With less calcium entering the cells, the muscles in the blood vessel walls relax, causing the blood vessels to widen. This reduces the resistance the heart has to pump against, lowering blood pressure.

Lacidipine is a long-acting calcium channel blocker, meaning its effects on blood pressure last over an extended period, allowing for once-daily dosing.
