Dosage Forms Available

• Gemifloxacin is available in tablet form for oral administration.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Gemifloxacin is intended for use in adults only. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been well-established in children.

Contraindications

• Gemifloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to it or other quinolones.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Gemifloxacin may interact with antacids and other medicines containing metal cations such as iron and zinc (e.g., aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and calcium carbonate) and anticoagulants (like warfarin and probenecid).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Taking more than the prescribed dose of Gemifloxacin may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and headache. In rare cases, seizures may occur. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
• If you miss a dose of Gemifloxacin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose. Completing the full prescribed course is important to prevent the infection from returning or becoming resistant to antibiotics.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects induced by Gemifloxacin are temporary and generally harmless and resolve upon discontinuation of this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water can help manage diarrhoea caused by this medicine.
• For managing nausea or vomiting, it can be helpful to take medication with food.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• This medicine may affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. Avoid driving if you feel dizzy or sleepy after taking this medicine.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Gemifloxacin is not recommended in pregnancy unless recommended by your doctor. It may cause harm to the foetus based on animal data. In the case of breastfeeding, it is not known if this medication is excreted in human milk. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness and fatigue) should exercise caution when taking Gemifloxacin due to an increased risk of muscle weakness.
• Patients with renal impairment should use Gemifloxacin with caution, with dose adjustment for those with creatinine clearance of <40 mL/min.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds as Gemifloxacin can make you susceptible to sunburns. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when you are outdoors.
• Maintain adequate hydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Gemifloxacin can potentially increase the risk of crystalluria (crystals in the urine), which may lead to kidney damage if not managed properly.
