Gefitinib is available in the form of oral tablets.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Gefitinib is meant for adult patients only.

Contraindications

• Gefitinib is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the medicine or any of its inactive ingredients.

• It should be used cautiously in patients with liver disease and severe renal impairment.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Gefitinib may interact with medicines that induce CYP3A4 activity (e.g., phenytoin and rifampin) and those that inhibit CYP3A4 activity (e.g., itraconazole and ketoconazole).

• Also, medicines that cause significant sustained elevation in gastric pH (histamine H2-receptor antagonists such as ranitidine or cimetidine) may interact with Gefitinib.

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Gefitinib may increase the severity of the side effects, such as diarrhoea and skin rash. If this occurs, get medical help immediately.

• If you miss a dose of Gefitinib, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• If you experience skin reactions like rash or acne, avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Use sunscreen if necessary.

• Drink plenty of water if you experience diarrhoea or nausea to avoid dehydration.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Gefitinib may cause side effects like dizziness or blurred vision, which may affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery.

• Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience any of these side effects.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Gefitinib is not recommended during pregnancy unless it is considered essential by your doctor due to potential risk to the foetus.

• It is not known whether Gefitinib passes into breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before using this medicine.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with liver disease or renal impairment should exercise caution when taking Gefitinib.

• It is recommended that patients with lung disorders such as interstitial lung disease (ILD) should be closely monitored for pulmonary symptoms while on treatment with Gefitinib.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Aim to maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables to support your immune system while on treatment with Gefitinib.

• Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, as they may increase the risk of lung disease and liver damage.

• Regular physical activity can help manage stress and improve overall health. However, be sure to discuss the type and level of physical activity that is suitable for you with your doctor.

• Ensure adequate hydration, particularly if experiencing side effects like diarrhoea or vomiting.
