How Ethamsylate works

Ethamsylate is a haemostatic agent, meaning it helps the body control bleeding.

It works by improving the ability of platelets, the blood cells responsible for clotting, to stick together and form a clot at the site of bleeding.

Ethamsylate also strengthens the walls of small blood vessels called capillaries, reducing their permeability. This combined action helps reduce and control bleeding from small blood vessels more effectively.

Disease/Condition Glossary

  • Bleeding Disorders: Bleeding disorders are conditions in which the blood does not clot properly, leading to excessive or prolonged bleeding. Examples include haemophilia, Von Willebrand Disease (VWD), and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). This occurs due to issues with clotting factors, proteins in the blood that are responsible for forming clots. When bleeding tendencies are too high, even minor injuries can lead to severe blood loss, internal bleeding, or joint damage. Bleeding disorders are typically assessed using blood tests, such as prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and factor assays. Early diagnosis and management, combined with clotting factor replacement or medication, help control symptoms and prevent complications.
  • Menorrhagia: Menorrhagia is abnormal, heavy, or prolonged menstrual bleeding. Women with this condition may experience periods lasting more than seven days or blood loss that soaks through pads or tampons every hour. When bleeding is too heavy, it can lead to iron-deficiency anaemia, fatigue, and a decreased quality of life. It is typically measured by tracking menstrual flow, frequency, and iron levels through blood tests. Treatment may include iron supplements, hormonal therapy, or surgical options, depending on the complexity of the condition.

Ethamsylate can be used alongside other haemostatic agents, but it is important to consult a healthcare professional before combining treatments to ensure safety and efficacy, and to avoid potential interactions.

Ethamsylate is effective for various types of bleeding, especially those related to capillary fragility. However, it may not be effective for bleeding caused by major trauma, severe coagulation disorders, or conditions requiring surgical intervention.

Ethamsylate is generally well-tolerated and does not typically affect blood pressure. However, if you have concerns about blood pressure changes while taking Ethamsylate, consult your healthcare provider.

Ethamsylate is effective in managing minor bleeding and capillary-related bleeding disorders. Compared to other treatments, it is less invasive than surgical options and can be used in a variety of bleeding scenarios. However, its effectiveness may vary depending on the cause and severity of the bleeding, so it is important to follow medical advice for the best treatment approach.
