Eperisone

Uses of Eperisone

  • Eperisone is a centrally acting muscle relaxant used to relieve painful muscle spasms and stiffness associated with musculoskeletal conditions. It helps improve voluntary movement and ease discomfort caused by tense or contracted muscles.
  • Eperisone is commonly used for:

    1. Muscle spasms and stiffness: Relieves involuntary muscle contractions and tightness associated with musculoskeletal pain conditions.
    2. Lower back pain (lumbago): Reduces muscle tension and spasm in the lower back that contributes to pain and restricted movement.
    3. Cervical spondylosis: Eases neck stiffness and muscle-related pain associated with degenerative changes in the cervical spine.
    4. Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis): Helps relax the surrounding muscles and reduce discomfort in patients with restricted shoulder movement.
    5. Shoulder pain and myotonic symptoms: Manages muscle pain and involuntary tightening in the shoulder region.
    6. Strained muscles: Provides relief from pain and spasm following acute muscle strain or overexertion.

Side effects of Eperisone

  • Drowsiness

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Loss of appetite

How Eperisone works

  • Eperisone works by acting on the central nervous system and blood vessels to reduce muscle spasm and improve blood flow to affected muscles.
  • It blocks sodium channels in nerve pathways within the brainstem and spinal cord that are responsible for transmitting signals that cause muscles to contract involuntarily. By reducing these signals, Eperisone helps tense or spasming muscles relax.
  • In addition to its central action, Eperisone also acts on vascular smooth muscle, causing blood vessels supplying the muscles to widen slightly. This improves blood flow to the affected area, helping to relieve the pain and stiffness that often accompanies muscle spasm due to reduced circulation.
  • Unlike some other muscle relaxants, Eperisone is considered to cause less sedation, making it generally better tolerated for daytime use in patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
