Eflornithine

Uses of Eflornithine

  • Eflornithine is an ornithine decarboxylase inhibitor used in two distinct forms a topical cream for unwanted facial hair in women, and an oral medicine used in the management of a specific type of childhood cancer.
  • Eflornithine is commonly used for:

    1. Unwanted facial hair (hirsutism) in women: The topical cream is applied directly to the face to slow down the growth of unwanted hair, particularly on the chin and upper lip area. It does not remove existing hair but reduces the rate at which it grows back.

    2. High-risk neuroblastoma: The oral form is used as maintenance therapy in adult and paediatric patients with high-risk neuroblastoma  a type of cancer that develops from nerve tissue  who have shown a partial or complete response to prior treatment. It helps reduce the risk of the cancer returning.

Side effects of Eflornithine

  • Skin redness

  • Irritation

  • Rash

  • Itching

  • Burning or stinging sensation on the skin

How Eflornithine works

  • Eflornithine works by blocking an enzyme called ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), which plays a key role in cell growth and division.
  • This enzyme is needed by the body to produce substances called polyamines, which are essential for cells to grow, divide, and multiply. By inhibiting this enzyme, Eflornithine disrupts the production of these substances, slowing down the growth of rapidly dividing cells.
  • In the topical cream form, this action slows the activity of hair follicle cells in the skin, reducing the rate of facial hair growth in women.
  • In the oral form used for neuroblastoma, the same mechanism helps limit the growth and return of cancerous cells that rely heavily on rapid cell division, supporting long-term disease management after primary treatment.
