Citalopram

Uses of Citalopram

Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used mainly to manage depression.

It is commonly used for:

  • Depression: Helps improve mood and other symptoms of major depressive disorder.
  • Panic disorder: Manages symptoms of panic attacks, as prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects of Citalopram

  • Nausea

  • Dry mouth

  • Fatigue or drowsiness

  • Increased sweating

  • Sexual dysfunction

How Citalopram works

  • Citalopram belongs to a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
  • It works by blocking the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain, back into nerve cells.
  • This increases the level of serotonin available between nerve cells, which helps improve mood and relieve symptoms of depression and panic disorder.
