Expert Advice

Dosage forms available

  • Carbidopa + Levodopa is available in immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, and extended-release capsules.

Age and dose restrictions

  • The typical starting dose for patients initiating Carbidopa + Levodopa treatment is as per doctor’s prescription. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed.

Contraindications

  • This combination is contraindicated in patients with a history of allergy to Carbidopa or Levodopa. It is also not recommended for individuals with narrow-angle glaucoma or those using nonselective monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Other medications to avoid

  • Avoid using nonselective MAOIs (isocarboxazid, phenelzine) with Carbidopa + Levodopa, as they can lead to hypertensive reactions. Additionally, caution is advised when taking antihypertensives, as combined use may result in orthostatic hypotension.

Overdose and missed dose

  • In case of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include muscle spasms or stiffness, rapid or irregular heartbeat, and unusual body movements.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's near the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Management of side effects

  • To manage nausea, taking Carbidopa + Levodopa with or just after food may help. However, high-protein meals can interfere with the medication's absorption, so monitor your diet accordingly. For dizziness or lightheadedness, rise slowly from sitting or lying positions. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor for possible adjustments to your treatment plan.

Use in driving and operating machinery

  • This combination may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you know how the medication affects you.

Use in pregnancy and lactation

  • Carbidopa + Levodopa should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk; consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Caution in other conditions

  • Use caution in patients with severe cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases, bronchial asthma, renal, hepatic, or endocrine diseases, and those with a history of peptic ulcer disease or convulsions.

Special dietary and lifestyle recommendations

  • Maintain a balanced diet but be mindful that high-protein meals can affect Levodopa absorption.
  • Regular physical activity may help improve mobility and overall well-being.
  • Monitor your symptoms and maintain regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider to adjust your treatment plan as needed.
