• Balofloxacin is available for use in the form of oral tablets.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Balofloxacin is indicated for use in adults only.

Contraindications

• Balofloxacin is contraindicated for individuals who are hypersensitive to any fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
• It should also not be used in individuals with a known history of seizures or QT prolongation.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Balofloxacin may interact with antacids (such as aluminium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate) and multivitamins (such as calcium and vitamin D).
• It can also interact with anticoagulants (like warfarin), antiarrhythmics (such as amiodarone and sotalol), and tricyclic antidepressants (like amitriptyline).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Taking more than the prescribed dose of Balofloxacin may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, or in severe cases, seizures. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
• If you miss a dose of Balofloxacin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Completing the full prescribed course is important to help prevent the infection from returning and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary, generally harmless, and resolve upon discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water can help manage mild side effects such as nausea and diarrhoea.
• If you experience dizziness, avoid standing up too rapidly from a sitting or lying position.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Balofloxacin may cause dizziness and lightheadedness. If you experience these symptoms after taking this medicine, it is advisable to refrain from driving or operating heavy machinery.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The use of Balofloxacin during pregnancy is only recommended if the benefits outweigh the risks.
• Balofloxacin could potentially be passed into breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you are breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Balofloxacin should be used with caution in patients with kidney or liver diseases. It is advisable for these patients to speak to a doctor before starting this medication.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• To manage urinary tract infections, increase your intake of fluids, especially water, to help clear the bacteria from your urinary tract.
• Avoid drinks that may irritate your bladder, such as coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks containing citrus juices or caffeine, and empty your bladder soon after you feel the urge to urinate.
• To manage respiratory tract infections, avoid smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke, as they can worsen respiratory conditions.
• Follow good hygiene practices, like washing hands frequently and wearing masks in crowded places, to prevent the spread of infections.
