Artemether + Lumefantrine

Uses of Artemether + Lumefantrine

Artemether + Lumefantrine is an artemisinin-based combination used to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum or mixed infections that include P. falciparum.

This combination is commonly used for:

  • Uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria: Rapidly reduces parasite numbers and clears the remaining infection when the full course is completed.
  • Mixed malaria including P. falciparum: Treats eligible mixed infections according to current local malaria guidance.
  • Chloroquine-resistant malaria: Is effective in many areas where chloroquine resistance occurs.

It is not used alone for severe malaria, which requires urgent hospital treatment.

Side effects of Artemether + Lumefantrine

  • Fatigue

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

  • Headache

How Artemether + Lumefantrine works

  • Artemether + Lumefantrine combines two antimalarial agents that work at different speeds to clear parasites from the bloodstream.
  • Artemether acts rapidly by producing reactive molecules inside the malaria parasite, damaging its internal membranes and quickly reducing parasite numbers in the blood.
  • Lumefantrine acts more slowly but stays in the body longer. It prevents the parasite from breaking down haem and building proteins, ensuring any remaining parasites are eliminated and preventing the infection from returning.

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • Taking more than the prescribed dose of Artemether + Lumefantrine may cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, and heart palpitations. High doses may also affect the heart's electrical activity (QT prolongation), which can be serious.
