Artemether + Lumefantrine

Dosage Forms Available

• Artemether + Lumefantrine can be taken orally (tablet, dispersible tablets and oral suspension).

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Artemether + Lumefantrine is prescribed for adults and children weighing 5 kg or more.

Contraindications

• Artemether + Lumefantrine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to either artemether, lumefantrine or any excipients in the formulation. It should not be used in patients with severe malaria, or in those with a family history of congenital QT prolongation or sudden death.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Artemether + Lumefantrine may interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as ketoconazole and macrolide antibiotics), CYP3A4 inducers (such as rifampin and carbamazepine), medicines that prolong the QT interval (e.g., antiarrhythmics, tricyclic antidepressants, certain antimicrobials), hormonal contraceptives and antiretrovirals (lopinavir/ritonavir).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Taking more than the prescribed dose of Artemether + Lumefantrine may cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, and heart palpitations. High doses may also affect the heart's electrical activity (QT prolongation), which can be serious. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention and do not take any further doses until you have spoken to a doctor.
• If you miss a dose of Artemether + Lumefantrine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if you begin to feel better.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• If you experience dizziness or sleep disorders, try taking the medication at bedtime.
• For gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea or vomiting, try taking the medication with meals.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Artemether + Lumefantrine may cause dizziness or fatigue. It is advised to avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience these side effects after taking this medication.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Always consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy and lactation.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with liver impairment should use Artemether + Lumefantrine with caution as it may lead to increased lumefantrine levels.
• While no dosage adjustment is required for mild to moderate renal impairment, caution is advised for severe impairment.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• Using insecticide-treated bed nets and mosquito repellents can help prevent re-infection with malaria.
• Regular fluid intake to stay hydrated is recommended, especially if experiencing fever or sweating due to malaria.
