Adalimumab

Uses of Adalimumab

Adalimumab is a biologic medicine used to manage several long-term inflammatory conditions in adults and children.

It is commonly used for:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Reduces joint pain, swelling, and stiffness caused by this autoimmune condition.
  • Psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis: Eases joint pain and stiffness affecting the joints and spine.
  • Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis: Reduces inflammation in the digestive tract, helping control symptoms such as stomach pain and diarrhoea.
  • Plaque psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa: Improves skin symptoms such as redness, scaling, and painful lumps.
  • Non-infectious uveitis: Reduces inflammation inside the eye that can affect vision.
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis: Manages joint inflammation in children with this condition, as prescribed by your doctor.

Side effects of Adalimumab

  • Injection site reactions (redness, rash, swelling, itching, pain)

  • Upper respiratory infections (sinus infections, sore throat)

  • Headaches

  • Rash

How Adalimumab works

  • Adalimumab is a monoclonal antibody that belongs to a class of medicines called TNF (tumour necrosis factor) blockers.
  • In several inflammatory conditions, the body produces excess amounts of TNF-alpha, a protein that drives inflammation and contributes to tissue damage in the joints, skin, gut, or eyes.
  • Adalimumab binds to TNF-alpha and blocks its activity, lowering inflammation at the affected sites. This helps ease symptoms such as joint pain, stiffness, and skin changes, and can slow the progression of the underlying condition. Because it affects the immune system, it may also reduce the body's ability to fight infections.
