Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available

  • Vitamin E can be taken orally (soft gel capsule, suspension and oral liquid).

Age And Dose Restrictions

  • It can be used by adults and children according to their age and medical condition.

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Vitamin E.

Medications To Avoid With This Drug

  • Avoid taking anticoagulants (warfarin), antiplatelet agents (acetylsalicylic acid, clopidogrel, and ticlopidine), thrombolytics, HIV medications (tipranavir), oestrogens, lipase inhibitor (orlistat), cholesterol-lowering agents (colestyramine and colestipol) and iron-containing medicines, anticonvulsants (phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepine). These medications may alter the safety and effectiveness of Vitamin E.

Overdose And Missed Dose

  • Overdose can cause nausea, diarrhoea, flatulence, tiredness, lack of energy, headache, blurred vision, and dermatitis. If an overdose is suspected, vitamin E supplementation should be stopped. Strict adherence to the prescribed dose and duration is essential to avoid overdosage.
  • If you miss a dose of Vitamin E, take it as soon as you remember. But, if the next dose is near, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing regime.

Management Of Side Effects

  • Take it with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects and continue taking it for the prescribed duration. If side effects worsen or persist, consult your doctor for a possible treatment plan adjustment.

Special Dietary And Lifestyle Recommendation

  • Ensure moderate fat intake, as vitamin E is fat-soluble. Including healthy fats, such as those from almonds, peanuts, and sunflower seeds, can enhance the absorption of vitamin E supplements.

  • If you are taking iron supplements, ensure an interval of at least 2 hours between both medications.
