Breast cancer is on the rise among Indian women.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women in India. Currently surpassing cervical cancer, this disease affects approximately 12% of Indian women over the course of their lifetime. Breast cancer usually does not cause symptoms in the early stages and is often detected with screening mammograms.

Although breast cancer does not show any signs or symptoms, sometimes it can produce visible or other detectable changes in the breast. Never ignore any lump, breast pain, change in appearance in the size or shape of your breast, dimpling of skin on parts of the breast (like an orange peel) or changes in the colour of the breast. Other symptoms include - itching, inward-turning nipple or flaky or crusty looking skin around the nipple or nipple discharge - which can be milky or yellow, or with tinges of blood.

Predisposing factors are positive family history, genetics, inactive lifestyle, smoking and alcohol consumption, dense breast tissue and obesity. Breast cancer sub types are identified with a microscopic examination of a biopsy sample. Treatment is always necessary.

Prevention of advanced breast cancer depends on early detection. Diagnosing breast cancer while it is still at an early stage offers the best possible outcome.

Early detection of breast cancer requires: 1) Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel like, and reporting any changes or symptoms to your doctor. 2) Seeing your doctor annually for a comprehensive breast exam 3) If you are under 40 years of age and have a family history of breast cancer, consult your doctor to understand when you need to begin annual mammograms and discuss the need for genetic counseling. 4)If you are over 40 with no family history of breast cancer, getting a regular mammogram is advisable.
